The Cries of Men is a search for love and acceptance.
The Cries of men shares the candid and true personal account of rape and sexual abuse from the voices of young Jamaican men. This is easily anyone's story. The search for love and acceptance is archetypical So is the journey through abuse: It is the story of the hero of every A or B list movie and every heroine in Harlequin romance His journey is the movement from the Tina Turner's song What's Love got to do with it ....to the gospel song with the lyrics. "Love lift me up where I belong." Maybe his batty bun him but so what, you got hair bruises on your dick from tight pussy and women got their pussy rim bun by big buddy, so bring on the pain and its metaphors. Other than his story there are things he has to say. Anti batty talk is an ingredient to being Jamaican. Jamaican male machismo is bogus. There are lots of "batty men" at all levels of Jamaican society.
Review by E.B Baisden- Author of The Fever of the Years a collection of 16 short stories
"The Cries of Men shares the candid and true personal account of rape and sexual abuse from the voices of young Jamaican men by providing an in-depth look into their secret lives."
"Author O'Brien Dennis demonstrates how one act of sexual violence can have a devastating effect on it's survivour/ survivors wether it's male, female, adolesent or adult."
Both author and book take a virgin journey to highlight the degree of homophobia in the realm of Jamaica's social fabric. Dennis reveals the powerful and intriguing stories of Jamaican male sexual abuse survivors, but also divulges unknown facts about Jamaican society- including the concept that homosexuality is an evil act, punishable by imprisonment of up to ten years of hard labor or by death as it relates to "street laws". Thought the topic is tabooed, each week in Jamaica there are over fifteen reported cases of sexual abuse of young men and boys, many more cases go unreported because men fear for their lives if they disclose the abuse. Dennis also provides a list of resources to assist in recovering from sexual abuse.
The cries of men have been kept silent for far too long in Jamaica. Dennis will inspire you with his own personal story of survival and will teach that through the truth, you can create your own happiness. This collection of evens also pays homage to the phrase "the truth will set you free"
